Watford remain in race to sign Barcelona’s out-of-favour striker Paco Alcacer

Watford remain interested in a deadline day move for Barcelona striker Paco Alcacer and have got forward Gerard Deulofeu on the charm offensive.

The 24-year-old is out of favour with the La Liga champions but is yet to be convinced to switch the club for the Hornets.

But close friend and former team-mate in Spain’s youth ranks, Deulofeu has remained in regular contact with Alcacer over the phone, according to Spanish publication SPORT, and is trying to convince the striker Watford is the right fit for him.

Deulofeu himself completed a permanent switch to Watford this summer from Barcelona having spent last season on loan with the London club.

Having gained a new lease of life, Deulofeu is said to be trying to twist Alcacer’s arm as he digs his heels in to stay with Barcelona.

With a matter of hours until the deadline closes, time is against both parties with Watford keen to agree a loan deal, while Barcelona want him offloaded permanently.

The move has been on and off for a number of weeks with the player holding all the power over the Premier League switch.

Along with Deulofeu, who joined for £11.5million, the north London club have made six signings this summer.

Stevenage’s Ben Wilmot joins Marc Navarro, Deulofeu, Ben Foster, Ken Sema and Adam Masina.
