Tayfun Korkut signs new two-year contract as Stuttgart coach

Tayfun Korkut and his backroom staff have had their contracts with Stuttgart extended to 2020 after impressing during the second half of last season.

The Baden-Württemberg club announced during their AGM on Sunday that the former Hannover coach had been rewarded for his efforts during just six months at the helm by signing a new deal, together with his two assistants Ilija Aracic and Steven Cherundolo.

Korkut arrived in Swabia in January and lifted the team from the lower regions of the Bundesliga to a respectable seventh-placed finish, only narrowly missing out on qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Under his guidance, the 2007 champions won nine, drew four and lost only one match, scoring 31 goals. Only record champions Bayern Munich boasted a better record in the second half of the season, although it was their defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Cup final which denied Stuttgart what would otherwise have been a berth in the Europa League qualifying round.

“We’ve got a top team of coaches led by Tayfun Korkut and we’re delighted to have extended the contracts with him, Aracic and Cherundolo until 2020,” said Stuttgart’s sporting director Michael Reschke. “Of course our on-field success in recent months has been extraordinary, but what was equally important to us was the professionalism that the trio have brought to the club and the harmony and obsession for success that the whole team have developed.”

Korkut said he was honoured by the club’s show of faith in his work, as he looks ahead to preparing the 2018/19 season with the aim of delivering even more success at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

“It soon became clear that we wanted to continue this successful path started over recent months and look to the future challenges with great motivation,” Korkut said. “Right from day one, working with this team and the whole team behind the team has been defined by mutual trust and with the common aim of being successful.”
