Real Madrid pay Lopetegui’s 2 million euro buy-out clause

Real Madrid will pay Julen Lopetegui’s two million euro buy-out clause to the Spanish federation following his signing for the Bernabeu club.

The federation issued a statement where they also asked for his current position as Spain coach be respected until after he steps down after the World Cup.

“The RFEF will receive the buy-out clause so that the coach can sign for Real Madrid,” it read.

Lopetegui’s contract with the national team was extended only a few days ago and now he is the fifth coach that Madrid have had to pay for following Toshack (90m pesetas in 1989), Pellegrini (4m euros to Villarreal in 2009), Mourinho (8m euros to Inter in 2010) and Ancelotti (4m euros to PSG in 2013).
