Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: MD6’s Man of the Matchday
It’s like the summer never even happened for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has simply carried on where he left off at the end of 2016/17: scoring goals.
On Matchday 6, the Gabon captain notched his fourth Bundesliga hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Last season’s top scorer set up Maximilian Philipp’s opening goal at the Signal Iduna Park before going on to net three himself in the space of 17 minutes as Dortmund racked up six in the Bundesliga for the first time in just over a year.
Aubameyang was a constant thorn in the side of Gladbach’s defence, managing eight shots on goal, including three against the woodwork, as his treble helped fire Dortmund back to the top of the table with an imperious 16 points and +18 goal difference – the former a club record and the latter a Bundesliga record after six games.
Watch: Aubameyang: “The race is on!”
The 28-year-old sits ahead of Lewandowski in the goalscoring charts, just as Dortmund find themselves above champions Bayern Munich in the table. Aubameyang has certainly shown he’s keen to take the fight to the Bavarians in the title race with his early performances.
