Navas flies to the Spanish Super Cup

This season is set to be the toughest for Keylor Navas since joining Real Madrid in 2014.

The signing of Thibaut Courtois has made it very difficult for the Costa Rican to hold onto the gloves this year.

However, everything points to Navas being the man to be handed the starting spot against Atletico Madrid in Tallinn for the Super Cup.

The Belgian didn’t even sit on the bench on Saturday night against AC Milan at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, and has trained very little with his new teammates, so his presence on Wednesday is tough to see, although not impossible.

It represents a small victory for Navas who has in his hands once again the chance to convince his new coach that he can still be Real’s starting goalkeeper and compete with Courtois for a place in the line-up.

He made two good saves that deserve credit against Milan in the first half, despite conceding a goal to Gonzalo Higuain that he could do little about.

In the second half, before being replaced by Andriy Lunin, he made a spectacular stop on a powerful Patrick Cutrone drive which was met with great applause from the home crowd.

Lunin was also welcomed with plenty of cheers upon his arrival after having a decent pre-season on tour with Los Blancos.

He didn’t have any real saves to make but the young goalkeeper is already proving a hit with fans.

His future is still up in the air and a loan in search of regular playing time is an option that the club must consider.

But he could also be put into the position of third choice goalkeeper or even play for Castilla.

It is a situation that will be resolved in the coming days but what is clear is that Real Madrid have their goalkeeping situation sorted for many years to come.
