Messi: It would be terrible to see Neymar at Real Madrid, a hard blow for everyone
The World Cup in Russia is just around the corner and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has given a far reaching interview in which he also accepts that it would be terrible to see his former teammate, Neymar, end up at Real Madrid.
Messi is once again carrying the hopes of his nation into the tournament, once which could conceivably be his last.
“It would be terrible, because of what Ney means for Barcelona,” he said on the TyC Sports channel programme ‘Libero.’
“Here he won important titles; Champions League, LaLiga… and it would be a hard blow for everyone.
“It would make Real Madrid better and when I speak with him, he knows it.”
Argentina need to get to the last four in Russia to have had a good tournament Messi believes.
“We deserve to be there because of our history although it cost us a lot in the last World Cups to reach to those rounds, but we have to be there again,” he continued.
“It’s more of a desire because of everything we’ve gone through, rather than an obligation.
“We’re the first to want to be champions in Russia.”
Asked if he would be aiming to do better than Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi suggested that it’s not a competition between the pair of them.
“I don’t compete with him,” he added.
“It stimulates me to see Real Madrid again in the Champions League final, to see them winning leagues.
“I want to win the Champions League every year, to be a league champion every year.
“It’s what we all want.”
Messi also dismissed inevitable comparisons that people make between him and other great players.
“I’m not interested in being the best ever,” he said.
“I’ve never said that I am, not first, second, third, or fourth. Every time I start a new year I try to improve myself, win everything, leave everything on the pitch, and give all I have both for my team-mates and for myself.”
