Manchester United arrive home after pre-season defeat by Bayern Munich

Manchester United touched back down in the UK in the early hours of Monday morning following the latest and final defeat of a miserable pre-season.

Jose Mourinho’s side were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich in Bavaria on Sunday night, with Javi Martinez’s header the difference between the two sides.

Attention for United now turns to the Premier League as they look to catch Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City side.

Mourinho’s side open their campaign against Leicester on Friday night and following their defeat in Germany, Mourinho’s side wasted no time returning home.

United flew back to the UK at 1am on Monday morning, just hours after the clash at the Allianz Arena.

Nevertheless, new signing Fred and Marcus Rashford still  took time to sign autographs for fans who had gathered to welcome them back to the north west.

There were reasons for Mourinho to be cheerful, too.

The United manager has overseen a miserable off-season and, speaking after the game on Sunday, he welcomed the return of the Premier League.

Mourinho also hailed the performances of his young players, who have been called upon in the absence of World Cup stars such as Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard.

‘Finally, it’s over. Finally, such a difficult pre-season is over,’ Mourinho told the club’s website.

‘The players were, once more, brilliant. They could not have done better than what they did. (It was a) fantastic experience for the boys.

‘There was a moment I was looking to the area and there was Axel (Tuanzebe) at centre-back to left, Demetri (Mitchell) at left wing-back, (James) Garner in midfield on the left and (Tahith) Chong.

‘At the same time it was Lewandowski on Axel, Robben on Mitchell, (Leon) Goretzka on Garner and (Niklas) Sule on Chong.

‘It was fantastic, absolutely fantastic. We were playing against their best team, it was their complete squad apart from (Corentin) Tolisso.’
