Lopetegui wants rock ‘n’ roll team
His motto comes down to two major principles: speed and more directness.
That’s the mantra for the Real Madrid coach and he hasn’t hesitated to insist and persist with the same message during training in Miami in the heat and humidity, where it is admittedly difficult to bring the best out in a side.
They are, in spite of the conditions, the first sessions with the majority of the players (the last five will arrive in the coming days) and the coach understands the importance of having everyone on the same page sooner rather than later.
But they aren’t the only ones vying closely for a spot, as Lopetegui’s fondness for Isco is well known and he has signalled his intent to give Ceballos opportunities this year.
Be that as it may, there are plenty of options for him to carry out the plan he has in mind.
One of the players that will be of most help with the system is Marco Asensio.
If the Basque tactician wants more speed and directness, then maybe he is the player, along with Gareth Bale, who offers this the most in both directions.
The doubt lies in the position and in the system.
If Los Blancos gamble on a 4-3-3, the attack could be Bale-Benzema-Asensio.
If Lopetegui reinforces the midfield, Asensio would have to compete with Isco and others for a spot on the left.
No matter what he chooses, Lopetegui wants rock ‘n’ roll and has players to spare for the season ahead.
