Klopp reveals the one reason why Liverpool have not signed a new defender this summer

Jurgen Klopp has not brought in a new defender this summer – because of Joe Gomez’s return to fitness.

The 21-year-old impressed last term before undergoing ankle surgery that forced him out of the Champions League final and World Cup as Trent Alexander-Arnold nailed down the right-back spot.

Gomez has also been used in central defence in pre-season as boss Klopp weighs up his options.

And he insists the former Charlton man is a much better option for the Reds than dipping into the transfer market again.

Asked if his transfer plans involved a defender, Klopp said: “This summer? No. I’m happy with our players to be honest. I don’t see the need.

“Joe Gomez brings a lot of things that we don’t find on the transfer market to be honest.”

Gomez was a second-half substitute in Liverpool’s 4-1 pre-season victory over Manchester United in Michigan.

Klopp remains without Dejan Lovren due to his World Cup involvement while Joel Matip flew home from the States with an injury.

It means the Liverpool boss may have to choose between Gomez and Ragnar Klavan to partner Virgil van Dijk in central defence for the opener with West Ham on August 12.

Liverpool face two more pre-season matches before that against Italian sides Napoli and Torino.
