Barcelona reach ‘agreement with Lenglet’ to bring him to Nou Camp
Barcelona are closing in on their first signing of the summer after reaching an agreement to bring highly-rated centre-back, Clement Lenglet, to the club.
Reports from Spain have claimed the 22-year-old is Barcelona’s number one target this summer and now the deal has moved a step further, with Lenglet agreeing to the transfer.
The need for reinforcements in defence became apparent when the La Liga champions’ unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt.
Back-up centre-backs, Thomas Vermaelen and Yerry Mina, showed they are not at the level required as Barcelona slumped to a 5-4 defeat against Levante in their penultimate game of the season.
The club have reacted immediately to their first league defeat and now have an ‘agreement with Lenglet’ in place, according to Spanish paperMundo.
A deal will cost Barcelona €35million (£30.7m) as they will have to match his buy-out clause to prise him away from Sevilla. €5m more than was originally reported in the Spanish media.
Lenglet has made a real impact since his arrival from Nancy last year, making 47 appearances for Sevilla, and Barcelona are in desperate need of defensive additions.
Vermaelen, 32, is coming to the end of his career, while Mina, 23, who only joined in January, has a lot of improving to do.
Lenglet’s compatriot, Samuel Umtiti, could also be on the move this summer after failing to agree a new deal at the Nou Camp.
The Barcelona star is holding out for a better deal but the club are reportedly unwilling to break the bank to keep him.
As a result Manchester United have shown an interest in Umtiti and they could convince the Spanish side to part ways with him for around £52million.
